Joey Stolpestad ’23 Breaks Minnesota State Record for All-Time Goals Scored in Boys’ Lax
Boys’ lacrosse standout and SPA senior Joey Stolpestad ’23 is Minnesota’s new all-time leading goal scorer. The previous state record for all-time goals scored was 185, set in 2017. Joey, who plays for the TriMAC Blackhawks (a cooperative team comprised of players from SPA and six other area schools), scored his 186th goal during the Blackhawk’s game on May 20, breaking the 2017 record and earning the top spot in the record books.
Joey, who is also a star defensive player for the SMB Wolfpack football team, has played for the Blackhawks since 2018. During that time Joey has scored 193 total goals: 32 in 2019, 43 in 2021, 50 in 2022, and 68 in 2023. Additionally, he has totaled 63 assists and 256 points for his career, good for sixth all-time among Minnesota’s career points leaders.
Blackhawks Head Coach Ben MacLean says Joey’s leadership and athletic ability are what makes him so special. “Joey is a phenomenal lacrosse player and an exceptional team captain and athlete,” MacLean says. “He sets the tone for our team on the field while holding his teammates accountable, and he makes everyone around him better. Joey has been an absolute pleasure to coach and to watch him develop into one of the best players in Minnesota lacrosse history has been awesome.”
This season the Blackhawks are 12-1 and earned the #6 seed in Section 3A. They will face off against the #3 seed, St. Thomas Academy on Thursday, June 1 at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Academy.
Congratulations Joey and go Blackhawks!
