Sports Medicine
Athletic Training Overview
This service is provided in partnership with Twin Cities Orthopedics. The competencies of our Athletic Trainer (ATC) include;
• Injury Prevention and Wellness Promotion
• Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis
• Immediate and Emergency Care
• Therapeutic Intervention
• Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility
The ATC serves as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes, and parents. The ATC ensures that players participate only when physically able and that any physician instructions are understood and followed. The ATC will coordinate with the Athletic Director to ensure that the Athletic Training Room and all required events will be covered. The ATC also manages and administers the ImPact concussion testing across the school. Our trainer is Anne Hutchins.
MSHSL SPORTS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
SPA requires ALL student-athletes (6-12) to have a current sports physical on file per the Minnesota State High School League eligibility rules. Physicals are good for 3 years. Our Athletic Training partner, TCO, offers FREE sports physicals at various locations during the summer. Visit their website HERE to learn more.
FIRST AID KITS/EAP’S
Coaches will be provided with a medical kit and emergency action plan (EAP) from the Athletic Trainer that will travel with the team at all times.
ImPACT TESTING/CONCUSSION RETURN TO PLAY GUIDELINE
All student-athletes involved in contact sports must complete ImPACT testing prior to participation in a contact sport. All athletes must be cleared by a physician or the Athletic Trainer before the return-to-play after sustaining a concussion.
MEDICAL COVERAGE FOR ATHLETIC EVENTS
An Athletic Trainer will be on campus for the majority of practices and cover most home varsity events to ensure the safety of the participants. An Athletic Trainer will also cover high-contact, home JV events for hockey, and football, and cover away varsity football. Through the use of cell phones, the Athletic Trainer is accessible in case of emergency.
It is important for families to note that in cases of an injury at an event, or during practice, the School will attempt to honor family requests regarding the choice of a personal physician or a designated hospital of choice; however, the School reserves the right to secure the most available and qualified assistance in cases of an injury to a student.
INJURED PLAYERS
If an athlete is seen by a physician for an injury or illness that keeps them out of practices/games, he or she MUST have a signed doctors’ note or “Return to Play” form before they are allowed to resume participation. If the athlete is directed by the trainer or an outside professional to not participate, then they need to be medically cleared by the trainer or treating doctor in order to return to play. Coaches and parents cannot clear an athlete to play if that athlete has been directed by a medical professional to not participate due to injury. Any return to play documentation can be scanned and emailed to the Upper School Athletic Director or the K12 Athletic Director or given directly to the Athletic Trainer. Contact information for the Athletic Department can be found at this Link.
General Athletic Training Guidelines
- Student-athletes are not to be in the training room unless they are being examined or receiving treatment by the trainer or coach.
- The training room whirlpool will not be used by students unless the coach or trainer is present. A student is not to be submerged to the neck level without a coach or trainer present. Time limit in the whirlpool is 11 minutes.
- All parties should communicate immediately following all injuries. Follow up on injuries is everyone’s responsibility.
- First-aid kits, EAP’s and Medical Information will be with the Head Coach and accessible through the rSchool mobile app.
- Taping for daily practice must be done prior to the start of practice
- Every student-athlete at St. Paul Academy and Summit School needs to report all injuries to their coach or trainer before, during or after practice.
